A developer setup doesn’t need RGB lights or a wall of screens. It needs to keep you in flow: enough screen space to see code, docs and a terminal at once; a machine that compiles without making you wait; input devices that don’t hurt after eight hours; and a desk that connects with one cable when you sit down. This guide builds that setup component by component, with a budget, balanced and high-end option for each.

1. The computer: prioritize memory over raw CPU

For most development work, the bottleneck is memory, not processor speed. An IDE, a browser with dozens of tabs, a local database, Docker containers and a mobile simulator can easily use 20 GB or more. As a rule of thumb: 16 GB for front-end and scripting, 24–32 GB for full-stack work with containers, and 36 GB+ for large monorepos, virtual machines or running local AI models.

A MacBook Pro remains a favorite because it is fast and silent on battery, runs Unix tools natively and is required for iOS development. 2. The display: text clarity or width?

Developers read text all day, so pixel density matters. Two strong paths:

  • Ultrawide (34–38″, 3440×1440): editor, browser and terminal side by side with no bezel. Great for full-stack work and debugging. Text is sharp enough on Windows but less crisp than Retina on macOS.
  • 27″ 4K or 5K: noticeably crisper text, especially on a Mac, with less horizontal room. Add a second screen in portrait for long files and logs.

3. One cable to connect everything

The small luxury that changes daily life most: plug in one cable and get your display, charging, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse, webcam and backup drive. There are three ways to get there:

  • Monitor with USB-C power delivery — the simplest; check the wattage covers your laptop.
  • Thunderbolt dock — for more ports, higher charging wattage, multiple displays and wired Ethernet. Popular docks such as the CalDigit TS4 offer well over a dozen ports from a single connection.
  • Budget USB-C hub — works, but often with lower charging power and a single display.

Use wired Ethernet through the dock if you can. Faster, more stable connections make a real difference for large pulls, container images and video calls.

4. Keyboard and mouse: comfort beats looks

You type thousands of keystrokes a day, so choose for comfort and consistency. Low-profile keyboards (like Logitech’s MX Keys line) keep wrists flatter; mechanical keyboards offer more tactile feedback and customization; split keyboards let your shoulders stay open and are worth considering if you have wrist or shoulder discomfort. For the mouse, a well-shaped ergonomic mouse with a fast scroll wheel (the Logitech MX Master series is a common choice) saves time in long files and wide timelines.

Tip: if you switch between a work laptop and a personal computer, pick devices with multi-device pairing so a button press moves them between machines.

5. Chair, desk and lighting

A long debugging session is a physical activity. An adjustable chair, a monitor at eye level and a desk at elbow height prevent most of the aches developers complain about. 6. Don’t skip the boring parts

  • Backups: an external SSD with Time Machine or File History, plus an off-site or cloud copy. Git is not a backup of your machine.
  • Audio: a headset or a USB microphone makes you much clearer in stand-ups than a laptop mic.
  • Power protection: a surge protector (or a small UPS if power is unreliable where you live) protects expensive gear.
  • Cable management: an under-desk tray and velcro ties keep one-cable setups genuinely clean.

Where to spend first

If you are building gradually, this order gives the biggest improvement per dollar: 1) enough memory in your computer, 2) a good external display at eye level, 3) a comfortable keyboard and mouse, 4) an adjustable chair, 5) a one-cable connection, 6) a sit-stand desk. Everything else is polish.
