Best Smart Lighting for Your Desk Setup

Task, ambient and key lighting for desks: BenQ ScreenBar Halo, Philips Hue Play, Govee and Elgato Key Light Air, plus easy automations.

Lighting is the most overlooked part of a desk setup. The right light reduces eye strain during long sessions, makes you look better on video calls and can shift from bright focus light in the morning to warm ambient light at night. Smart lighting makes those changes automatic. This guide covers the types of light a desk needs and the best-known products for each.

Three layers of desk lighting

  1. Task light illuminates your keyboard, notebook and desk surface. A monitor light bar is the cleanest option because it doesn’t reflect on the screen.
  2. Ambient or bias light softly lights the wall behind the monitor. Reducing the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room makes evening work more comfortable.
  3. Key light lights your face for video calls from in front of you.

What to look for

  • Adjustable color temperature: cooler (about 4000–5000 K) for focus during the day, warmer (about 2700–3000 K) in the evening.
  • High color rendering (CRI 90+) if you edit photos or care about accurate colors.
  • Flicker-free dimming to avoid eye fatigue.
  • Ecosystem: Matter support, or compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa, if you want automations.

The picks

BenQ ScreenBar Halo — best task light

It clips onto the top of your monitor and aims light down at the desk with an asymmetric design that keeps glare off the screen. A wireless puck controls brightness and color temperature, and a rear backlight adds soft ambient light. It works on curved monitors too.

Philips Hue Play Light Bar — best ambient light

Place one or two behind your monitor for bias lighting, or use them to wash a wall with color. They integrate with the Hue ecosystem and can sync with what’s on your screen through the Hue Sync app. A Hue Bridge unlocks the full feature set and automations.

Govee RGBIC lighting — best value accents

Govee’s LED strips and lamps offer multi-color effects, music sync and scheduling at low prices. They’re great for decorative lighting behind a desk or shelves. For task lighting, pair them with a proper white light.

Elgato Key Light Air — best for video calls

A soft LED panel on a desk stand, controlled from an app on your computer or phone. Place it slightly above eye level and off to one side of your camera for flattering, even light. It’s the single biggest improvement to video call quality after camera position.

Easy automations

  • Workday start: turn on cool task light and ambient light at a set time.
  • Meeting mode: key light on when your camera activates (possible with some apps and shortcuts).
  • Evening wind-down: switch everything to warm, dim light after sunset.
