Amazon Alexa

Strengths: the largest catalog of compatible devices, inexpensive Echo speakers, great Echo Show displays for kitchens and doorbell video, and routines that are easy to set up. Amazon has been rolling out Alexa+, a more conversational AI assistant. Weaknesses: shopping suggestions and promotions can feel intrusive, and much processing happens in the cloud.

Google Home

Strengths: excellent answers to general questions, deep integration with Android, Google Calendar, YouTube and Nest cameras, and a capable automation editor. Google is bringing Gemini to its smart home devices. Weaknesses: Google has discontinued or changed products over the years, and some advanced features require subscriptions.

Apple Home

Strengths: a clean, reliable app, strong privacy protections, local control of many devices, HomeKit Secure Video for encrypted camera recordings (with iCloud+), and seamless use from iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac. Weaknesses: requires Apple devices, fewer compatible products than Alexa, and Siri is less capable for general questions.

You can mix platforms

Matter devices can be added to more than one platform at once. An iPhone user and an Android user in the same home can both control the same Matter smart plug from their preferred app. Learn how in Matter and Thread explained.
