MacBook Pro M4 Buying Guide: M4 vs. M4 Pro vs. M4 Max in 2026

Which M4 MacBook Pro should you buy? Configurations, strengths, weaknesses, how much memory you need and whether an M4 still makes sense in 2026.

MacBook Pro M4 Buying Guide: M4 vs. M4 Pro vs. M4 Max in 2026

The M4 generation of the MacBook Pro, launched in late 2024, is still one of the most common laptops on developers’ and creators’ desks — and in 2026 it is often one of the best-value ways into a Pro-level Mac, because newer models have pushed M4 units into discounts and refurbished stock. This guide explains the differences between the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max versions, what they do well, where they fall short, and which configuration makes sense for your work.

Short version

  • Buy the M4 (14-inch) if you want the Pro display, ports and battery life for web development, office work, photo editing and light video.
  • Buy the M4 Pro if you compile large projects, run several containers or VMs, or edit 4K video regularly.
  • Buy the M4 Max only for sustained GPU work — 3D, heavy color grading, 8K footage or running large local AI models that need a lot of memory.
  • Consider a MacBook Air if you don’t need the brighter 120 Hz display, extra ports or sustained performance under load.

Configurations as announced by Apple for the M4 generation. Available options vary by retailer and region.

Every model shares the same core design: an aluminum chassis, a Liquid Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120 Hz, HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe 3 charging, a headphone jack and a 12 MP Center Stage camera. A nano-texture (matte) display option is available if you work near windows or bright lights.

What it does exceptionally well

Performance per watt

Apple silicon’s biggest advantage is not raw peak speed but how much performance it delivers on battery and without loud fans. Compiling code, exporting photos or scrubbing through 4K footage feels the same unplugged as plugged in, which is still not a given on many Windows laptops that throttle on battery to preserve runtime.

Battery life

Apple rates the 14-inch M4 model at up to 24 hours of video streaming. Real-world numbers depend heavily on brightness and workload, but for a typical day of browsing, messaging, documents and an IDE, most owners report comfortably getting through a full workday without a charger. Heavy GPU work on M4 Pro and M4 Max models drains the battery much faster.

The display

The mini-LED XDR panel is one of the best laptop screens available: very high HDR brightness, deep contrast, accurate color out of the box and smooth 120 Hz motion. For photo and video editing on the go, it removes the need for an external reference monitor in many situations.

Ports that make sense

HDMI and an SD slot mean fewer dongles for presentations and camera workflows. The move to three Thunderbolt ports on the base M4 (earlier base models had two) makes it easier to run a dock and an external display while still charging via MagSafe.

Where it falls short

  • Upgrades are expensive and permanent. Memory and storage are soldered. Apple’s upgrade pricing is steep, so choose carefully — you cannot add RAM later.
  • Gaming is limited. The hardware is capable, but the macOS game library is far smaller than on Windows, and many multiplayer titles with anti-cheat do not run.
  • Some professional software is Windows-only. Certain engineering, finance and CAD tools require Windows; virtualization helps in some cases but not all.
  • External displays on the base chip. The base M4 supports fewer external monitors than the Pro and Max chips — check if you plan a multi-monitor desk.
  • Weight. At around 1.5 kg (3.4 lb) for the 14-inch and over 2 kg for the 16-inch, it is heavier than a MacBook Air.

How much memory do you actually need?

Your workSuggested memory
Office apps, browsing, writing, light photo editing16 GB
Web or mobile development with an IDE, simulators and a few Docker containers24–32 GB
Large codebases, multiple VMs, 4K multicam editing36–48 GB
Running large language models locally, 8K video, big 3D scenes64 GB or more (M4 Max)

For storage, 512 GB is workable if you use cloud storage and an external SSD for projects; 1 TB is more comfortable for developers and anyone keeping photo or video libraries locally. A fast external Thunderbolt SSD is often a cheaper way to add space than Apple’s internal upgrades.

Should you still buy an M4 in 2026?

Apple has since moved the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro to the M5 chip, with improvements focused largely on GPU and on-device AI performance. For most people the practical difference in everyday work is small, which is why a discounted M4 — new, refurbished from Apple, or from a reputable retailer — can be the smarter buy. It makes sense to pay more for the newer chip if you rely on GPU-heavy or AI workloads, or if the price gap is minimal. Whichever you choose, macOS support for Apple silicon Macs has historically lasted many years.

Buying tips

  • Compare against Apple’s Certified Refurbished store, where machines are inspected, cleaned and sold with Apple’s standard one-year warranty.
  • Check education pricing if you are a student or teacher.
  • Match the configuration exactly when comparing prices: chip, memory, storage and display type (standard or nano-texture) all change the price.
  • Consider AppleCare+ if you travel with your laptop; repairs to the display or logic board are costly.

Verdict

The M4 MacBook Pro remains a superb professional laptop: fast, quiet, long-lasting and with a best-in-class display. The base M4 is enough for more people than Apple’s marketing suggests; the M4 Pro is the sweet spot for developers and video editors; the M4 Max is a specialist tool.
